thebakuproject.
In Armenian, the word kef translates to party or feast. If there is one thing Armenians can do when coming together, it's having a great time with food, dance, and drink! Holding events that raise funds, get the word out, and bring Armenians together for this great cause are integral. The planning committee at St. John coordinates events months ahead of time, and the church sends announcements to those on their mailing lists. Feel free to read about past events, browse through pictures, and learn about future fundraising efforts.

Baku-Sumgait Memorial Benefit Dinner at Allegro Restaurant
West Bloomfield, Michigan
To raise its goal of $35,000, the Baku-Sumgait Monument Planning Committee recently planned a benefit dinner for December 4, 2011. After several weeks of arranging, the event was anticipated to be an enormous success - and it did not disappoint. Father Garabed Kochakian blessed the table in front of a full house, and the night began on a perfect note. From the splendid food to the beautifully lit and decorated venue, both generously provided by Garri and Kristina Mazmanov at their restaurant, Allegro, in West Bloomfield, Michigan, to the phenomenal volunteer staff of Arthur and Enrico Agamyan, Mike and Greg Babayan, Mikhail Balasanov, Arsen Mazmanian, Gulchekhra Nasirova, Alex Orman, and Iryna Yatsyshyn, and finally, to the traditional Armenian sounds of Garri Hovakimian, Alex Mazmanian, and Tamara Yesayan, the night's success proved that Armenians would never forget the injustices committed against their people. The benefit dinner succeeded in raising over $8,000, a large portion of the total amount needed to erect the monument.

Poun Paregentan Fundraiser at St. John Armenian Church
Southfield, Michigan
To celebrate Poun Paregentan, a strolling luncheon and silent auction was planned at St. John Armenian Church. It was held on February 19, 2012 after church service in the Great Room, and was a beautiful event. Deacon Richard Norsigian presented the history of the pogroms and Armenians in Baku, a short video presentation was shown, and Father Garabed blessed the table in front of hundreds in attendance. The delicious variety of food and drink was met with great auction items and this beautiful combination kept guests very happy. The time was without a doubt enjoyable, and at the end of the day, every single item had been auctioned off! This beautiful Sunday started off Great Lent and also raised a total of $4,200 towards the monument.
We thank all of our food and auction item donors! Without you Poun Paregentan at St. John's would not have been made possible. For pictures from this event, please visit our Flickr stream here.
